Early Life

Born Dua Lipa in Westminster, London on August 22, 1995, her name translates from Albanian to "I love," "I want," or "I need." Her parents, ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, left Pristina in the 1990s. Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School and grew up listening to her father's music, singer Dukagjin Lipa.

In 2008, her family returned to Kosovo when the country declared independence from Serbia. At the age of 15, she moved back to London to pursue a music career, living with friends. At 16, she began her modeling career.

2015-2017: Breakthrough and "Dua Lipa"

In 2015, Lipa signed with Warner Bros. Records and began working on her debut album. She released her debut single, "New Love," produced by Emily Haynie and Andrew Watt, in August. Her second single, "Be the One," written by Lucy "Pooh" Taylor, was released in October. It became a success in Europe, reaching number one in Belgium, Poland, and Slovakia and charting in the top ten in 11 other European countries. In Australia and New Zealand, it peaked at number 6 and number 20, respectively.

Lipa's musical style is described as "dark pop." She was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2016 list in November 2015. In January 2016, she embarked on her first concert tour in the UK and Europe, which continued throughout the fall. On February 18, 2016, Lipa released her third single, "Last Dance," followed by "Hotter than Hell" on May 6. It became a worldwide hit, notably reaching number 15 in the UK. "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)" was released as the fifth single on August 26. It became her first single to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 72. It also reached number 23 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart.

Her self-titled debut album was released on June 2, 2017. Her seventh single, "New Rules," soared to number one in the UK, making it the first number-one single by a female artist in the UK in two years since Adele's "Hello" in 2015. The song became her best-selling single to date and charted in the top ten of several countries, including number 2 in Australia, number 7 in Canada, and number 11 in the US. Lipa performed at the Glastonbury Festival in June. By December 2017, Lipa was Spotify's most-streamed female artist in the UK. Four of her singles made the UK top ten of 2017: "Be the One," "Bridge over Troubled Water" (a charity single recorded for families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire in London by Simon Cowell), "New Rules," and "No Lie."
