A Journey of Strength: Bella's Battle with Leukemia
Bella Allan, a determined nine-year-old girl from Melbourne, has faced the horrors of leukemia not once, not twice, but thrice. Despite the relentless onslaught of the aggressive disease, diagnosed when she was six, Bella has emerged victorious each time.
The Devastating Diagnosis
"It felt like someone had ripped my heart out of my chest," said Alison, Bella's mother, recalling the moment they received the devastating diagnosis. "Bella broke down in tears, and so did her team of oncologists. There's nothing worse that a mother can hear."
Despite her own despair, Alison found the strength to remain composed for Bella. "I had to stay strong and not show my fear because Bella would have read straight through me. If I broke down, she would break down."
Waiting for a Miracle
Currently, Bella receives maintenance chemotherapy to keep the leukemia at bay. "There's still no cure for Bella," said Alison. "So, we cross our fingers and hope that it stays away."
In an effort to maximize their time together, Bella's family of five recently embarked on a two-week trip to the United States. The Allan family was able to fundraise for their dream trip.
Moments of Joy and Love
"It's just amazing to see your child so happy," said Alison. "We were able to forget about the awful reality for a while. Disneyland is one of those places where all you can do is smile."
Alison, a successful professional boxer, made the difficult decision to step away from the ring to focus on her daughter. "Bella had a relapse a year ago, so I had to step out and put my baby first," she explained.
A Social Media Sensation
Bella's story sparked a viral social media campaign earlier this year when she had to miss a Justin Bieber concert to undergo chemotherapy. The hashtag #BeiberMeetBella trended worldwide, but sadly, Bieber did not meet with Bella in person.
Relapses and Transplants
Since then, Bella has undergone two bone marrow transplants and experienced a severe case of graft-versus-host disease, where donor cells attack surviving abnormal blood cells.
"She's had three relapses," said Alison. "But she's currently in remission. Her journey has been okay."
A Family United in Hope
Despite the challenges, the Allans remain positive and focused on fulfilling Bella's every request. "It's a bit like being on a roller coaster," said Alison. "We try to do as many of the normal family things as we can. We make sure the other kids are still doing sport and staying active."
"It's hard when Bella suddenly ends up in hospital. I have to leave the house and rely on friends and family to look after my other two children."
"But we try to spend as much quality time together as we can. We're just making memories," said Alison. "We just got back from Disneyland, which was funded through Go Fund Me. We've also taken Bella to theme parks in Queensland."
On Bella's upcoming birthday, her family plans to go all out to make her special day unforgettable.
