Biography of Bella Darvi

Bella Darvi, a French actress, was born to Polish Jewish parents, Chaim and Chaya Vegier (maiden name Szelbaum). She had three siblings: Robert, Jacques, and Jean-Isidore. Tragically, Robert died in a concentration camp during World War II. Bella herself was imprisoned by the Nazis during the war but was eventually freed in 1943.

Rise to Fame and Personal Life

In August 1953, Bella signed a contract that led her to change her name to Darvi, a combination of the names Darryl and Virginia. This marked the beginning of her rise to fame. Despite being involved with various other men, Bella became the mistress of producer Darryl F. Zanuck. Zanuck eventually left his wife for Bella, but he ended their relationship upon discovering her lesbian or at least bisexual tendencies.

Marriage and Decline

On November 13, 1960, in Las Vegas, Darvi married Claude Rouas, a waiter. However, their marriage was annulled less than a year later. Following the annulment, Bella returned to Europe and appeared in several minor films. She quickly fell back into her old habits of alcohol and card games, but this time, no one was there to save her. Bella regularly reached out to Zanuck for help, but he ignored her pleas.

Tragic End

Completely devastated and burdened with debts and failures, Bella made several suicide attempts, one of which proved successful. On September 11, 1971, at the age of 42, the actress took her own life by inhaling gas in Monte Carlo. Her body was not discovered until 10 days later.
