Early Life and Acting Beginnings
Benjamin Charles Eldridge was born on November 12, 1985, in Exeter, Devon, England. Raised in a religious evangelical Christian family, Eldridge later distanced himself from religion. He honed his acting skills at the National Youth Theatre and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
Theatre and Screen Debuts
Eldridge made his theatre debut in 2004, playing the Doctor in "The Master and Margarita" at the Lyric Theatre. Subsequent stage roles included Rhotenkope in "Antigone at Hell's Mouth," Benvolio in "Romeo and Juliet," and Brian Hutchins in "The Lion." In 2013, he starred as Paul Owen in the Almeida Theatre's production of "American Psycho."
Eldridge's film debut came in 2008's "Compulsion." He appeared in supporting roles in "Candles in Babylon" (2010) and the television film "Heavenly" (2011). His breakthrough role came in the third season of the romantic drama series "Lark Rise to Candleford" (2010).
Notable Roles and Acclaimed Films
Eldridge's career gained momentum with his portrayal of Captain Charles James in the military drama series "Our Girl" (2013-2015). He further showcased his versatility in the biographical drama "The Railway Man" (2013), alongside Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Stellan Skarsgård.
In 2014, Eldridge joined the cast of the critically acclaimed series "Reign." While his fellow castmates received praise and awards, his performance as Antoine de Bourbon was also well-received.
Despite starring in the comedy "DeTour" (2016), Eldridge's role in the mystical drama "Titan" (2018) was overshadowed by the performances of Sam Worthington and Tom Wilkinson. However, he found success in 2019 with the crime series "Pennyworth," which explored the origins of Batman's butler, Alfred Pennyworth.
Exploring LGBTQ+ Themes
In 2022, Eldridge portrayed a gay character in the drama "Spoiler Alert." Based on Michael Ausiello's memoir, the film featured scenes between Eldridge and Jim Parsons, who played his lover. The film received positive reviews, but its box office performance was underwhelming.
