Biography of Ben Askren
Ben Askren, born on July 18, 1984, in Cedar Rapids, IA, is an American wrestler and participant of the 2008 Olympics. He is a remarkable athlete and talented fighter, specializing in freestyle wrestling. Askren competes in the weight category up to 74 kilograms, representing the United States national team at international competitions. He is a member of the Sunkist Kids club.
Early Life and Education
From a young age, Ben Askren was involved in sports. He attended Hartland Arrowhead High School in Wisconsin, where he was considered one of the strongest young athletes in the school. It was during this time that he was noticed by the renowned coach John Mesenbrink, who trained him for a long time and helped him become a formidable freestyle wrestler. In 1999, Askren won a silver medal in the state championship. He went on to become the undefeated State Champion in 2000 and 2001. After completing high school, Askren enrolled in Missouri College, where he was recognized as a promising wrestler and one of the future hopes of American wrestling. He was coached by the outstanding mentor Brian Smith.
College Achievements
Under Smith's guidance, Askren became a four-time finalist at the prestigious NCAA tournament and made it to the finals twice in the All-American competition. The seasons of 2006 and 2007 were incredibly successful for the freestyle wrestler. He achieved numerous victories at the highest level, becoming a two-time NCAA champion and winning the Hodge Trophy twice. The following year, Askren continued to excel primarily in national tournaments.
International Success
Later on, the young wrestler showcased his skills at international championships as well. Askren achieved an honorable third place at the international tournament in Kiev. He also participated in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Athens four years ago, but only managed to secure sixth place. This year, Askren successfully qualified for the main competitions in Beijing. Unfortunately, the young and talented freestyle wrestler did not manage to secure a podium finish. Nevertheless, he earned several victories, demonstrating his worthiness.
Current Endeavors
Recently, Ben Askren returned to the United States to share his experiences at the Olympics and prepare for upcoming tournaments.
