Early Career and Transition to Azerbaijan
Sharif Sharifov began his wrestling journey in Kizlyar before moving to Makhachkala, where he trained under Russian coach Anvar Magomedgadzhiev. In 2007, he represented Russia at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade. Deciding to compete for Azerbaijan, Sharifov acquired Azerbaijani citizenship and adopted the name Sharif Sharifov.
International Debut and Early Successes
Sharifov made his international debut for Azerbaijan in 2008. In 2009, he won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Herning. The following year, he claimed a silver medal at the European Championships in Baku, falling to Russian opponent Anzor Urishev.
Career Highlights
In 2011, Sharifov's career took off. He won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Dortmund and then captured the gold medal at the World Championships in Istanbul in the 84 kg category, earning him a spot at the 2012 London Olympics, where he ultimately won the gold.
In 2012, Sharifov was awarded the "Shohrat" Order (Glory) by the President of Azerbaijan and the Olympic Order by the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan.
Olympic Success and Future Aspirations
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sharifov earned a bronze medal. He continued to perform at a high level, winning a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in Nur-Sultan, which secured his spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Recognition and Achievements
Sharifov has been consistently ranked among Azerbaijan's top athletes, placing in the top 10 in 2011 and the top 20 in 2012.
