American Surfer Paddles from Cuba to the United States on a Surfboard

In the summer of 2013, American musician and surfer Ben Friberg made global headlines as the first person to paddleboard from Cuba to the United States. The 35-year-old Tennessean musician made the 111-mile (179 km) journey standing up with only a paddle.

A Journey for Peace and Friendship

Friberg stated that he embarked on the aquatic feat as a gesture of peace and Cuban-American friendship. Setting off from Port Hemingway, Cuba, he arrived in Key West, Florida, after 28 hours of paddling.

Physical and Philosophical Challenges

The voyage proved to be physically more challenging than anticipated, yet Friberg also found moments of awe and reflection, marveling at the turquoise waters and contemplating the power of nature and the transience of life. Despite donning a baseball cap, shorts, long socks, and a long-sleeve white shirt to protect himself from the sun, Friberg arrived in Key West dehydrated and exhausted.

Previous Adventures and Triumphant Arrival

Friberg was no stranger to such feats, having previously raced down American rivers on his surfboard. As he stepped ashore in Key West, he held onto his paddle for support, his legs wobbly after hours on the water. The crowd on the beach greeted him with applause and cheers.

A Symbol of Hope for Cuban-American Relations

Whether Friberg's bold swim would contribute to stronger Cuban-American ties remained to be seen, but he savored his status as the first person to have paddled from Cuba to the United States on a surfboard.
