Biography of Ben Shalom Bernanke

Ben Shalom Bernanke was born on December 13, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Dillon, South Carolina. His father worked as a pharmacist and a theater manager, while his mother was an elementary school teacher. He has a brother, Seth, who is a lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a sister, Sharon, who is an administrator at Berklee College of Music in Boston. From a young age, Bernanke showed talent in various areas, winning spelling competitions at the age of 11 and playing the saxophone in an orchestra during his teenage years. He also had aspirations to become a writer and planned to write a novel. Before attending Harvard University, he worked on the construction of a new hospital and made tables for a restaurant.

Education and Career

Despite his parents' concerns about him being influenced negatively by leaving home and participating in student protests, Bernanke's academic advisor, Kenneth Manning, convinced them that Harvard was the right choice for him. In 1975, Bernanke graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard, with honors. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979. Bernanke taught at Stanford Graduate School of Business from 1979 to 1985 and served as a visiting professor at New York University before becoming a professor at Princeton University. From 2002 to 2005, he also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. It was during his time as chairman of the Federal Reserve that Bernanke delivered his famous speech titled "Deflation: Making Sure 'It' Doesn't Happen Here," which later became known as the "Bernanke Doctrine."

Chairman of the Federal Reserve

On February 1, 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Bernanke as the chairman of the Federal Reserve. His leadership and bold actions during the 2008 financial crisis, which helped prevent another Great Depression, earned him praise. President Barack Obama announced on August 25, 2009, that Bernanke would serve a second term as the chairman of the Federal Reserve. He received 70 votes in favor and 30 votes against in the U.S. Senate. In 2014, Bernanke announced that he would not seek reappointment for a third term, and Janet Yellen became his successor. During his tenure as chairman, Bernanke utilized mathematical analysis to make important decisions. He has a deep interest in the Great Depression and believes that the prolonged duration of the crisis was due to mistakes made by the Federal Reserve, which could have been corrected through an increase in the money supply. In 2009, he was named "Person of the Year" by Time magazine. Bernanke's role was portrayed by actor Paul Giamatti in the 2011 television film "Too Big to Fail."

The "Helicopter Ben" nickname

Bernanke earned the nickname "Helicopter Ben" after referencing Milton Friedman's idea that sometimes dropping money from a helicopter could help combat inflation.
