Biography of a Former Icelandic Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationBorn in Iceland, the former Prime Minister graduated from Harvard University in 1946 with a Bachelor's degree in history. Subsequently, he pursued graduate studies at Oxford in 1947.
Journalism and Television
His career began in journalism, where he worked as a reporter for the magazine Al???ubla?sins fr?ttastj?r. Later, he served as its editor-in-chief from 1956 to 1966. He also played a pivotal role in the development of Icelandic television as one of its pioneers.
Political Career
Entering politics in 1956, the former Prime Minister was elected to the Icelandic Parliament (Althing) and served as a member of parliament until 1982. During this period, he led the Social Democratic Party from 1974 to 1980.
Premier of Iceland
In 1978, he was appointed Iceland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 1980. Concurrently, he served as Prime Minister of Iceland from 1979 to 1980.
Diplomatic Service
After stepping down as Prime Minister, he continued his diplomatic career, serving as Iceland's ambassador to Sweden and Finland.
