He is the leader of the well-known group "Court 13", which is dedicated to making independent low-budget films. Early Life

Born on October 14, 1982, in a suburb of New York City, Benh grew up in a creative family. His father, Steve Zeitlin, was a Jewish folklorist who turned his collection into the largest folklore center in New York City called "City Lore: the New York Center for Urban Culture". His mother also contributed to the creation of the center and was a devout Protestant.

As a child, Benh enjoyed watching movies and gradually realized that what happens on screen is pure fiction that cannot exist in real life. After graduating from high school, he attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he studied film and drama. It was at the university that Benh met other aspiring independent filmmakers who shared his dream of making their own films.

Early Career

Benh's first project was his graduation film, "The Egg", which combined animation and a retelling of the story of Moby Dick. Although the film did not receive top marks, the entire film crew was satisfied with their work. This experience inspired Benh and his collaborators to establish their own independent group called "Court 13". The headquarters of this unique studio was located in New Orleans, where most of their films were shot.

Benh's first film with Court 13 was the short film "Glory at Sea", which showcased the true face of the city during a devastating hurricane. The film blended reality and fantasy, with fictional stories intertwining with real-life events. Despite facing financial difficulties during the five-month filming process, the creators of the film sold their own belongings to complete it. The premiere took place at the Prytania Theatre in New Orleans, and not a single person left the theater without shedding tears.

Rise to Success

Following the success of "Glory at Sea", Benh showcased his debut work at several independent film festivals. In addition to their film projects, the members of Court 13 also directed music videos for young bands, including the famous video for the song "Kids" by the band MGMT.

Benh's next major project was the feature film "Beasts of the Southern Wild", which received critical acclaim. The film tells the story of a young girl's coming-of-age journey in a flooded village in the southern United States. The film's narrative explores themes of the apocalypse, the girl's father's battle with cancer, and the universal meaning of the flood. The film's young lead actress, Hushpuppy, portrayed by Quvenzhané Wallis, became the youngest actress ever nominated for an Academy Award and won over 30 awards for her role.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and received four Academy Award nominations. Notably, it had the lowest budget among all the nominated films, at $1.8 million.

Currently, Benh Zeitlin resides in New Orleans and continues to collaborate with his friends from Court 13.
