Early Life and Military Career

José María, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1815, embarked on a remarkable military career that spanned multiple continents. After killing an opponent in a duel, he was forced to join the army as a private but quickly rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant.

Uruguayan Civil War and Mexican-American War

José María fought in the Uruguayan Civil War and later participated in General Pascual Echagüe's unsuccessful uprising against Juan Manuel de Rosas in 1841. Following the failed revolt, he fled to Mexico and enlisted in the Mexican Army. He fought valiantly in the Mexican-American War of 1848.

California and Spain

After the war, José María engaged in trade in California before relocating to Spain. There, he joined the Spanish Army and continued his military service.

Crimean War: Османский союз

When the Crimean War broke out, José María was part of General Juan Prim's Spanish mission to the Ottoman Army. In September 1854, he arrived in the Crimea as part of an Ottoman division. His participation in the conflict marked the culmination of his diverse military career.
