Benny Drama - Early Life and Inspiration
Benjamin Jonathan Skinner was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, where he attended Bishop Kelly High School. While in high school, Skinner founded the non-profit OATHS (Organization Assisting the Homeless of Schools) and was recognized at the 2011 Idaho Gives Day of Giving. He also played wide receiver on the Bishop Kelly football team.
Skinner's early comedic inspirations included Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire and SpongeBob SquarePants. Despite performing Britney Spears and Destiny's Child songs for his family, he suppressed some of his early performance and comedic inclinations due to bullying and homophobic comments.
College Years and Social Media Presence
Skinner attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he studied theater and performance studies, English, and film and media. In college, he began experimenting with performance art in the form of recorded lip-syncing and other videos. He created the Instagram handle @BennyDrama7 in high school, with "7" referring to his football jersey number, but only began posting comedic videos during his college years.
Career and Accolades
After graduating, Skinner worked as a video editor while continuing to create online content. In 2016, he made his social media accounts public, and that early work blossomed into comedic video skits on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. He gained recognition for his celebrity impressions, such as Shawn Mendes, Lana Del Rey, and Kourtney Kardashian, as well as original characters like Jenny the Hairdresser. He has described his work as being "fully grounded in pop culture."
In 2018, he debuted his live show "Overcompensation" at Carolines on Broadway to a sold-out crowd at the New York Comedy Festival. He hosted the pop culture podcast "Obsessed" with Mary Beth Barone on Spotify for one season and 50 episodes.
Personal Life
Skinner is openly gay and came out during his senior year of college. He resides in Los Angeles, California, with his boyfriend, filmmaker Terrence O'Connor. They are known for their elaborate and highly produced annual couples' Halloween costumes.
