Biography of Emilio Fernandez
Emilio Fernandez was a Mexican director and actor. He was of indigenous origin and was also known as "El Indio". Fernandez studied at a military school before starting his career in the film industry.
Early Career
From 1928 to 1933, Fernandez appeared in minor roles in Hollywood films. In 1934, he transitioned to becoming an actor in Mexican cinema, starring in films such as "Heart of a Bandit" (1934) and "Maria Elena" (1935). However, his breakthrough role came in the film "Janitzio" directed by Carlos Navarro.
Directorial Success
After establishing himself as an actor, Fernandez tried his hand at directing. He directed films such as "Island of Passion" (1941) and "I Am a True Mexican" (1942). However, his distinctive directorial style was truly defined in the film "Wild Flower" (1943).
Fernandez gained international acclaim with his film "Maria Candelaria" (1943), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. This film marked the birth of a new school of Mexican cinema influenced by indigenous ideas.
Award-winning Career
Fernandez's most fruitful period as a director was in the 1940s. Many of his films were recognized with awards from the Mexican Film Academy. His films were rooted in realism and contained elements of social critique, focusing on the lives of characters from the working class, predominantly indigenous peasants and fishermen, portrayed in a romanticized and elevated manner.
Artistic Style
Fernandez's artistic style was characterized by a combination of beauty and tragedy, drawing inspiration from ancient Mexican legends, the influence of muralist painters, and a poetic and aesthetic portrayal of indigenous people. He was awarded the "Mexico" prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946 and the "Contribution to the Art of Cinema" award at the Venice Film Festival in 1947. He also won the award for "Best Visual Solution" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1953.
