Early Life and Inspiration
Benson Kiplagat was a Ugandan middle-distance runner who specialized in the 3000-meter steeplechase. His inspiration came from Boniface Kiprop, a fellow villager who won a medal at the 2004 World Junior Championships.
International Debut and Record-Breaking Performances
In 2006, Kiplagat made his international debut at the World Cross Country Championships, where he finished sixth in the junior race. He also qualified for the World Junior Championships, where he set a new Ugandan junior record of 8:35.77 and later improved it to 8:34.14, finishing sixth in the final. In 2008, Kiplagat finished fourth at the World Cross Country Championships and broke the Ugandan record three times, setting it at 8:03.81. He also won a silver medal at the World Junior Championships.
Health Struggles and Resurgence
Kiplagat's 2009 season was hampered by malaria and typhoid, but he still managed to improve the Ugandan national record to 8:12.98. Despite another bout of malaria and a leg boil in 2010, he lowered the record further to 8:03.81. He finished fourth at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Olympic Appearances and Disqualification
Kiplagat competed in the 2008 Olympics, finishing ninth in the steeplechase. At the 2012 London Olympics, he reached the final but was disqualified.
Tragic End
On December 31, 2023, Kiplagat was reportedly stabbed to death and his body was found in a car near Eldoret, Kenya. The tragedy cut short the life of a talented athlete who had achieved significant success at the international level.
