Biography of Benjamin Verdonk
Benjamin Verdonk is a Dutch artist known for his controversial and provocative performance art projects. He believes that "man is created for happiness, like birds are created for flight." In his recent project, Verdonk explores this concept by incorporating both a human taking on the role of a bird and the act of flying.
The Giant Nest
In one of his most notable performances, Verdonk created a giant nest attached to the wall of the Weena skyscraper in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This massive nest, designed for a human-sized "bird," captivated the attention of both locals and visitors to the city. Verdonk spent six weeks constructing the nest using authentic materials such as birch branches, willow branches, straw, sand, and saliva. Although he adhered to the principles of nest-building, he had to deviate from the traditional construction methods as nests of this size do not exist in the wild.
The Illusion of Flight
Completing the nest was just the first phase of Verdonk's project. He then placed a large egg inside the nest and proceeded to incubate it. After a short break, Verdonk appeared to levitate above the crowd, stepping out of the nest and defying gravity. Ingeniously, he used a hidden technical device to achieve this illusion without compromising the authenticity of the performance. Verdonk named the project "The Great Swallow," symbolizing the artist's desire to embrace his audience while risking the comfort and security of his nest.
A Controversial Artist
"The Great Swallow" is not Verdonk's first major public event. He consistently seeks to challenge societal norms and push the boundaries of art. Through his bold and sometimes law-defying actions, Verdonk aims to capture the attention of his audience and provoke their thoughts and emotions. He believes that his restless heart, constantly seeking new and unfamiliar sensations, drives him to create these striking and sensational performances.
