Biography of Karl Heinrich Anton Mücke

Karl Heinrich Anton Mücke was a German historical painter. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts under the guidance of F. Schadow and, together with him, moved to Düsseldorf in 1826. In Düsseldorf, he was commissioned by Count Schaesberg to decorate the Heltorf Castle with frescoes depicting scenes from the history of Frederick Barbarossa. This commission in 1838 brought Mücke recognition and made him famous.

Early Career and Travels

In 1833-1834, Mücke visited Italy. His painting, "Angels Carrying the Deceased St. Catherine to Mount Sinai" (currently located in the Berlin National Gallery), was so well received by the German public that the artist had to paint five reproductions of it.

In 1844, Mücke was appointed as a teacher at the Düsseldorf Academy, and in 1849, he received the title of professor. In 1850, he traveled to England and subsequently made several trips to Switzerland.

Notable Works

In addition to the mentioned painting, some of Mücke's best works include a fresco depicting the Madonna with Three Saints (in the Church of St. Andrew, Düsseldorf, 1835), "St. Ambrose Driving Emperor Theodosius from the Church Doors" (1838), "St. Elizabeth of Hungary Distributing Alms" (1841, in the Berlin National Gallery), "St. Elizabeth Parting from Her Husband" (1841), "The Introduction of Christianity into the Wupper Valley" (1842; a fresco frieze in the Eberfeld Town Hall), "Godfrey of Bouillon Storming Jerusalem" (1844), "Dante in Verona" (1846), "St. Adalbert" (1851; an altarpiece in the Frauenburg Church), a series of scenes from the life of St. Meinrad, painted for Duke Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, "The Good Shepherd" (in the Kaiserwerth Church), "The Death of Cleopatra" (1873), and a large composition in the form of a frieze depicting Rhine legends and history. Many of his illustrations for various luxurious editions were also very successful.

Legacy

Karl Mücke's son, Karl Mücke, established himself as a talented genre painter with genuine emotion and strong color in the late 19th century.
