Childhood and EducationBernard Campan was born on April 4, 1958, in Agen, France. However, he spent his childhood in the larger city of Tours. His parents were Jean, an Italian teacher from Bordeaux, and Jacqueline, a French teacher from the Hautes-Alpes region. Bernard's elder brother, François, was his childhood companion.
Despite coming from an educated and talented family, Bernard struggled in school. Math and Latin proved difficult, and even his music teacher was perplexed by his apparent lack of ability. His luck changed when, in a literature class, he was asked to write a text in any form. Choosing poetry, Bernard received the comment, "Poems worthy of a real poet." This inspired him to continue writing and eventually publish a collection of 50 poems.
The Inconnus Trio
In his youth, Bernard moved to Paris to study acting at Simon's courses. It was here that he met Didier Bourdon and Pascal Légitimus, forming the comedy trio Les Inconnus (The Strangers).
Les Inconnus began performing in small venues in the mid-1980s, gaining immense popularity. They launched their television show, "La Télé des Inconnus," on Antenne 2 in 1990, which became an instant success. The trio's sketches and parodies were widely acclaimed, earning them the title of Best Comedy Show of the Year.
Transition to Cinema
At the height of their television fame, Les Inconnus decided to switch to cinema. They released "Les Trois Frères" (The Three Brothers) in 1995, which was a critical and commercial success, winning the César Award for Best Debut Film.
Following a legal dispute with their former producer, which temporarily halted their collaboration, the trio reunited to film "Les Rois Mages" (The Three Wise Men).
Solo Projects and Films
Bernard Campan's solo acting career showcased his dramatic talent. He starred in "Se souvenir des belles choses" (Remember the Beautiful Things) in 2001, and "Poids léger" (Lightweight) in 2004.
In 2005, he co-starred with Monica Bellucci and Gérard Depardieu in Bertrand Blier's "Combien tu m'aimes?" (How Much Do You Love Me?).
Bernard also directed, wrote, and starred in his debut film, "La Face cachée" (The Hidden Side) in 2007.
Personal Life
Bernard Campan values his privacy and lives away from Paris with his family. He has been married to Anna for over 25 years, and they have two daughters, Nina and Loan.
Recent Projects and Legacy
In 2013, Les Inconnus reunited for "Les Trois Frères: Le Retour" (The Three Brothers: The Return). While critically panned, the film was a financial success.
Bernard Campan continues to act, direct, and write. In 2021, he starred in "Envole-moi" (Just Kids), a philosophical comedy about a funeral home owner and a disabled man who take a road trip together. The film was released internationally in 2022.
