Bernard Joseph Fanning is an Australian musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the leader and vocalist of the Australian alternative rock band 'Powderfinger'.

Early Life and Musical Interest

Fanning was born and raised in Toowong, Brisbane, Australia. He developed an interest in music from a young age, with his mother encouraging him to play the piano. At the age of 12, Bernard began writing music, although he later described his early creations as "absolutely terrible". Despite this, he found immense pleasure in the creative process.

University and Formation of 'Powderfinger'

After completing college, Bernard attended the University of Queensland to study journalism. However, he soon realized that he did not want to pursue a career in this field and dropped out to focus on music. Alongside his university acquaintance Ian Haug, as well as John Collins and Steven Bishop, Fanning formed the recently established band 'Powderfinger', quickly becoming its lead vocalist. Darren Middleton later replaced Bishop as the band's guitarist.

Success with 'Powderfinger'

Over the course of 15 years, 'Powderfinger' released five studio albums and achieved significant success in the Australian music industry. In 2005, the band temporarily disbanded, allowing Fanning to launch a solo project and release an album. However, they reunited in 2007 to release two more studio albums before parting ways again.
