American Entrepreneur
Bernard Marcus, an American entrepreneur, was born in 1929 in Newark, New Jersey, to Russian immigrant parents. Growing up, Marcus and his family lived in an apartment where he spent most of his childhood.
Early Career
Initially, Marcus aspired to become a doctor but his parents couldn't afford to pay for his education. As a result, he had to find a job and ended up working with his father as a cabinetmaker. Afterward, he attended Rutgers University, where he earned an honorary Bachelor of Science and Arts degree.
Shortly after graduating, Marcus worked as a pharmacist at a local pharmacy. He then went on to work for various retail cosmetic organizations before becoming the CEO of Handy Dan Improvement Centers, a retail chain based in Los Angeles. However, after a serious conflict with the owner of Handy Dan Improvement Centers, Marcus and his partner Arthur Blank were fired from the company.
Home Depot
In 1979, Marcus and Blank attracted a group of investors and co-founded the retail chain Home Depot. The company thrived and, after a period of restructuring, became one of the most successful retailers, generating significant profits. Marcus became the first-ever president of Home Depot and served as its CEO until his retirement in 2002.
Philanthropy
Aside from his business ventures, Marcus is known for his philanthropic activities. He played a significant role in funding The Marcus Institute, an educational institution in Atlanta that provides assistance to children and teenagers with developmental disabilities. Marcus and his wife donated nearly $200 million to the institute, earning them a place on the list of top philanthropists in the country.
Today, Bernard Marcus serves as the chairman of the Marcus Foundation, a charitable organization that supports children, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and Jewish communities.
