Early Life and Career
Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Bernard Vukas began his football career in the youth ranks of the local club Konkordija. He then moved on to amateur club Amater and subsequently joined Zagreb.
Move to Hajduk Split
In the summer of 1947, Vukas made a significant move to one of Yugoslavia's strongest clubs, Hajduk Split. As a key member of the team, he won three Yugoslav championships and served as captain. In the 1954-1955 season, he emerged as the league's top goalscorer with 20 goals, earning the recognition of Yugoslav Sportsman of the Year.
International Recognition
During his tenure at Hajduk, Vukas was twice selected for the European team by FIFA. In 1953, he played in a 4-4 draw against England at Wembley. The following year, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over Great Britain in Belfast.
Time in Italy and Return to Hajduk
In 1957, Vukas transferred to the Italian club Bologna, where he spent two seasons but struggled for goals, scoring only twice in 45 appearances. He returned to Hajduk in 1959 and remained with the club for another four seasons.
Later Career and Legacy
At the age of 36, Vukas left Croatia for Austria, playing for Austria Klagenfurt, GAK, and Kapfenberg. He eventually ended his playing career at his boyhood club Hajduk as the sporting director.
International Career
Vukas represented the Yugoslav national team from 1948 to 1952, winning two Olympic silver medals in 1948 and 1952. He also participated in two World Cups, playing four matches in the final tournaments. Overall, he made 59 appearances for Yugoslavia, scoring 22 goals.
Post-Retirement
From 1971 until his passing, Vukas served as the director of the coaching school in Belgrade. He left an enduring legacy as one of the most prolific strikers in Croatian and Yugoslav football history.
