Mario Gularte, a prominent Guatemalan politician, served as the General Secretary of the Guatemalan Labour Party (GLP) from 1954.
Early Life and Education
Gularte was born in Guatemala City into a family of lawyers. He pursued his studies at the University of San Carlos, where he became actively involved in student activism.
Political Career
Gularte's political journey began in 1949 when he was elected to the Central Committee of the GLP. During his time there, he rose through the ranks, becoming Secretary of Organizational Affairs from 1949 to 1954. In 1954, he was elected General Secretary of the GLP. Under his leadership, the party embraced the concept of "popular revolutionary war."
Imprisonment and Exile
Gularte's political activities led to his arrest in 1955. However, due to public outcry, he was released in 1956 and exiled to Honduras. He later returned to Guatemala illegally and was again arrested in September 1963. During this detention, he was subjected to torture. A campaign for his release gained momentum, resulting in his liberation but also his expulsion from the country.
Assassination
On September 26, 1972, Gularte was once again apprehended by the national police along with six other members of the GLP's Political Committee. He was tragically killed shortly after his arrest.
