Early Life and Revolutionary Activities
Son of a SextonVincas Mickevičius-Kapsukas was born into a family of a sexton, demonstrating his humble beginnings. However, his life would take a tumultuous turn as he became deeply involved in the communist movement.
October Revolution and Petrograd Involvement
Mickevičius-Kapsukas played a pivotal role in the October Revolution in Petrograd. He actively participated in suppressing the Kerensky-Krasnov mutiny, showcasing his revolutionary fervor.
Lithuanian Communist Leader
Petrograd Lithuanian Section and CommissariatAfter the establishment of the Soviet Union, Mickevičius-Kapsukas became the chairman of the Petrograd Lithuanian Section of the Russian Communist Party (b) and the Petrograd branch of the Commissariat for Lithuanian Affairs.
Lithuanian-Belarusian SSR Representative
In 1919, Mickevičius-Kapsukas represented the Provisional Workers' and Peasants' Government of Lithuania and later the Council of People's Commissars of the Lithuanian-Belarusian SSR within the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
Underground Resistance in Vilnius
When Polish forces occupied Vilnius, Mickevičius-Kapsukas emerged as the secretary of the underground Central Bureau of the Communist Party of Lithuania and Belarus in the city.
Imprisonment and Exile
Arrest and ExchangeIn 1920, Mickevičius-Kapsukas was arrested by Polish authorities. However, he was released in 1921 as part of a political prisoner exchange between the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and Poland.
Moscow and Lithuanian Section
Upon his arrival in Moscow, Mickevičius-Kapsukas attended the First and Third Congresses of the Comintern. He was appointed secretary of the Lithuanian Section within the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (b).
Return to Lithuania and Execution
Clandestine Activities and Political PersecutionMickevičius-Kapsukas returned to Lithuania in 1923, operating in the party's underground network in Kaunas. He became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania.
Smeatona Coup and Death Sentence
Following the Smetona coup in 1926, Mickevičius-Kapsukas was arrested along with other communist leaders. After a trial, he was sentenced to death alongside Juozas Greifenbergeris, Rapolas Čarnas, and Karolis Požela.
Execution at Fort VI
On December 27, 1926, Mickevičius-Kapsukas and his fellow comrades were executed by firing squad at Fort VI in Kaunas, becoming martyrs in the struggle for communism.
