Eberhard Keil: A Master of the Baroque
Early Life and TrainingEberhard Keil was born in 1624 in the Danish town of Helsingør to a German painter who worked at the court of King Christian IV. As a young man, he studied in Copenhagen with the artist Maarten van Steenwinckel before joining Rembrandt's workshop in Amsterdam.
Independent Studio and Travel
After returning to Denmark, Keil established his own studio where he instructed young artists. In 1651, he embarked on a journey to Italy, where he painted portraits, worked on commissions for palaces, and fulfilled orders for the Carmelites in Venice and the Monastery of St. Bartholomew in Bergamo.
Italian Sojourn: A Peak of Creativity
Italy proved to be the most fertile period in Keil's career. He became a leader of the Italian "realist" school, specializing in scenes depicting the lives and spirituality of ordinary people. His most notable works include portraits, genre paintings, and religious compositions.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1656, Keil moved to Rome, where he remained until his death in 1687. His art is characterized by its realism, attention to detail, and empathy for the common man. Keil's work left a lasting legacy, influencing generations of artists and establishing him as a prominent figure in the history of Baroque art.
