Early Life and Career
Bert Remsen was born on February 25, 1925, in Glen Cove, Long Island. His father was a police officer. Remsen attended Ithaca College, where he was a member of the Kappa Gamma Psi fraternity. He served as a helmsman on a destroyer during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, Remsen began his acting career on television, appearing in an episode of "Suspense" in 1952.
Film and Television Career
Remsen made his film debut in 1960. He went on to appear in over 185 films and television shows, including "Maverick," "Wanted: Dead or Alive," "Perry Mason," "Route 66," "Charlie's Angels," "Starsky and Hutch," "Dallas," "Dynasty," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Melrose Place," and "The Pretender." He was known for his character roles, often playing gruff and authoritative figures.
Robert Altman Collaborations
Remsen had a long-standing collaboration with director Robert Altman. He appeared in seven of Altman's films, including "Brewster McCloud" (1970), "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" (1971), "Thieves Like Us" (1974), "California Split" (1974), "Nashville" (1975), "Buffalo Bill and the Indians" (1976), and "A Wedding" (1978).
Personal Life and Legacy
Remsen married twice. His first wife was actress Katherine "Scottie" MacGregor, who played the role of Harriet Oleson in "Little House on the Prairie." They divorced after a short time. In 1958, Remsen married actress Barbara Dodd, and they remained together until his death in 1999. They had two daughters, Ann and Kerry. Both Ann and Kerry Remsen work in the entertainment industry. Ann is a casting director who has worked on ten films. Kerry is an actress who appeared in numerous television shows and films in the 1980s and 1990s.
Bert Remsen died from a heart attack on April 22, 1999, at the age of 74, in Sherman Oaks, California. He is remembered as a versatile character actor who left a lasting impression on film and television.
