Bertrand Cantat: French Musician and Leader of Noir Désir
Bertrand Cantat is a French musician, poet, and the lead vocalist and songwriter of the rock band Noir Désir. Under his leadership, Noir Désir became one of the most prominent bands in French music during the 1990s.
Political Activism
Cantat is known for his left-wing political views and has been vocal in his opposition to globalization, fascism, urban despoliation in Bordeaux, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Marriage and Family
In 1997, Cantat married Kristina Rady, with whom he had two children: a son, Milo (born 1997), and a daughter, Alice (born 2002).
Tragedy and Murder Trial
On July 27, 2003, Cantat had a violent altercation with his girlfriend, French actress Marie Trintignant, in a Vilnius hotel. As a result of the assault, Trintignant fell into a coma and died from a brain edema caused by severe head trauma.
Cantat was taken into custody and sentenced to 8 years in prison. Amidst public outcry, he was transferred from a Lithuanian prison to one in France in 2004. Both Marie's family and Cantat appealed the sentence, but the appeals were later withdrawn.
Release and Aftermath
Cantat was granted early release on October 16, 2007. His house in the Landes region was burned down in 2003, which is believed to be linked to Trintignant's death. Cantat has not returned to music publicly since his release.
