Bertrand du Guesclin: A Legendary French Warlord

Born into a noble Breton family, Bertrand du Guesclin was a renowned military leader during the Hundred Years' War. Initially supporting Charles of Blois in his claim to the Duchy of Brittany, du Guesclin later switched allegiance to King Charles V of France in 1364.

Service Under Charles V

Du Guesclin's military prowess was evident in his victory at Cocherel (1364) against Charles II of Navarre. He subsequently commanded the French army in battles against English forces, including the devastating defeat at Auray (1364), where Charles of Blois was killed. Despite this setback, du Guesclin's reputation for leadership and tactical brilliance grew.

Expedition to Castile

King Charles V appointed du Guesclin to lead a force of mercenaries known as "routiers" to assist Henry of Trastámara in his struggle against his brother, Peter the Cruel, who was supported by Edward, the Black Prince. Du Guesclin's intervention in Castile transformed the conflict into a proxy war between France and England.

Connétable of France

With the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War in 1369, du Guesclin was appointed Connétable of France, the highest-ranking military commander. Adopting a strategy of avoiding decisive battles and harassing English forces, du Guesclin gradually recaptured territories lost to England in the Treaty of Brétigny (1360).

Legacy

Du Guesclin's death during the siege of Châteauneuf-de-Randon in 1380 was a significant loss for France. He was buried with honor in the Basilica of Saint-Denis alongside the French kings. While not universally regarded as a great general, du Guesclin's reputation as a master of siege warfare and a symbol of French resistance endures. He became one of the "Nine Worthies," legendary figures celebrated as paragons of chivalry. In the face of adversity during the Hundred Years' War, du Guesclin's name became synonymous with French resilience and determination.
