Famous Brazilian Actress Betty Faria
Early Life and CareerBetty Faria, a well-known Brazilian actress and producer, was born in the prestigious neighborhood of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. She comes from a family of a general and a homemaker. After ten years of training in classical dance, Betty made her film debut in 1963 in the movie "Kiss." In 1965, she played her first significant role in the film "Love and Unlove." In 1967, along with her first husband, actor Claudio Marzo, and another actor, Antonio Pedro, she founded the theater "Teatro Carioca de Arte." The theater staged plays such as "The Good Soldier Schweik" by Jaroslav Hasek and "The Petty Bourgeois" by Maxim Gorky. However, due to the military dictatorship in Brazil, the theater had to be closed down.
Television and Film Career
Betty Faria's television breakthrough came in 1968 when she played a significant role in the TV series "Shackled." The director of the series was her future second husband, Daniel Filho. Throughout her film career, Betty starred in notable movies such as "Rising Star" (1974), "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" (1976), "Bye Bye Brazil" (1979), "Angels from the Outfield" (1987), "The Housekeeper's Diary" (1987), and "Jasmine's Scent" (1992). In 2004, she successfully debuted as a film producer in the movie "Confiscated Property" where she also played the lead role. One of her most iconic TV roles was Lucinha in the 1975 TV series "Wild Money," written by Janete Clair. The series also starred Francisco Cuoco and Lima Duarte. Daniel Filho, Betty's second husband, directed the series. In 1998, a remake of the series was made by Globo TV, starring Francisco Cuoco, Carolina Ferraz, and Eduardo Moscovis in the lead roles, but it did not achieve the same success as the original version.
Iconic Role and Personal Life
Another TV role that became synonymous with Betty Faria for a long time was the extravagant "Tieta" in the TV series of the same name in 1989. Based on the novel by Jorge Amado and adapted for television by screenwriter Aguinaldo Silva, the series became one of the most popular in Brazil's television history. Betty Faria wished to portray Tieta on the big screen, but the rights for the film adaptation were acquired by another famous actress, Sonia Braga, who played the role in the 1996 film "Tieta of Agreste." To date, Betty Faria has appeared in over 25 TV projects for Globo TV and acted in 20 films.
Betty Faria has been married three times. Her first husband was actor Claudio Marzo, and they had a daughter named Alessandra Marzo, who would also become an actress. Her second husband was renowned director Daniel Filho, with whom she had a son named Joao. They divorced due to Betty's infidelity during the filming of the TV series "Two Faces," where she fell in love with her co-star, actor Mario Gomes. Her third husband, Franklin Thompson, was 30 years younger than her, and they were married until 2001. Betty Faria has four grandchildren: Julia, the daughter of Alessandra, and the three children of Joao (twins Valentina and Joao Paulo, and Antonio). She currently resides in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro and has been a dedicated Buddhist for many years.
