Elizabeth Folan Gilpin was born on July 21, 1986, in New York City. She grew up in a theatrical family, with both of her parents, Jack Gilpin and Ann McDonough, being Broadway and film actors. Her ancestors on her father's side were prominent politicians, including great-great-grandfather John Mitchell, a US Senator from Wisconsin, and great-great-grandfather Lawrence Tyson, a Senator from Tennessee. Betty's cousin, Drew Gilpin Faust, was the president of Harvard University for ten years.
