Beverly Johnson, born on October 13, 1952, is an American actress, supermodel, and businesswoman. She is best known as the first African American fashion model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974. This incredible achievement paved the way for other dark-skinned models, resulting in the rise of modern-day celebrities such as Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks.

Early Life and Career

Beverly was born into a middle-class family in Buffalo, New York. In her childhood, she excelled in swimming and even became a champion in several local competitions. Originally planning to become a lawyer, she studied criminal justice at Northeastern University. However, her friends suggested that she try her hand in the modeling business.

She quickly received an assignment from Glamour magazine and actively pursued her modeling career. Johnson appeared on over five hundred different covers, including the legendary August 1974 cover of Vogue. This appearance significantly altered the existing beauty standards, and by 1975, every reputable agency had African American models.

Other Ventures

In addition to her modeling career, Beverly Johnson also engaged in writing and acting. She authored "Beverly Johnson's Guide to a Life of Health and Beauty" and made appearances in movies such as "Ashanti," "The Meteor Man," "Def Jam's How to Be a Player," and "Crossroads." She also had guest roles in several television series, including "Law & Order," "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," and "The Parent 'Hood."

For a brief period, Johnson explored singing and even released an album in 1979 under the record label "Buddah Records." Currently, she works as a judge on the reality show "She's Got The Look" on TV Land. The show features a competition among women over the age of thirty-five for a modeling contract and a photoshoot in a magazine. Johnson, along with other notable figures in the fashion industry, evaluates the contestants.

In 2006, Beverly Johnson was honored at the Legends Ball, along with Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Tina Turner, and other renowned African American women in the entertainment, arts, and civil rights industries. The New York Times named Johnson one of the most influential women in the fashion industry in the twentieth century.
