Childhood and Early Musical Beginnings
Beverly McClellan was born on July 6, 1969, in Kingsport, Tennessee, and raised in Gate City, Virginia. From an early age, she exhibited a passion for music, starting piano lessons at the age of four. McClellan later mastered a wide range of instruments, including guitar, trumpet, french horn, mandolin, ukulele, bass, djembe, percussion, and various drums.
Club Scene and Uncommon Ground
At age 24, McClellan began her singing career. For over two decades, she performed in clubs and bars around Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2004, she won the New York National Music Festival, beating out 500 other contestants. McClellan joined the duo Uncommon Ground with musician Tami Gordon and later collaborated with singer-songwriter-guitarist Robyn Fear.
DJ's Daughter and Solo Career
McClellan went on to form her own band, DJ's Daughter, named after her mother. She released several songs with the group and toured extensively before embarking on a solo career. McClellan released two albums and later joined the Fort Lauderdale band Swoop.
The Voice and Mainstream Success
In 2011, McClellan received an unexpected invitation to participate in the first season of the reality show "The Voice." Having already released five self-funded albums, she auditioned and impressed Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera with her powerful rendition of "Piece of My Heart." McClellan joined Aguilera's team and advanced to the finals, where she shared third and fourth place with another finalist.
Personal Life and Health Battles
McClellan was open about her unconventional preferences, gracing the cover of SHE magazine in 2011. She also contributed lead vocals to Steve Vai's song "John the Revelator" on his album "The Story of Light" and toured with him in 2012.
In 2018, McClellan was diagnosed with endometrial cancer that had metastasized to her colon, bladder, and bowels. Despite her ongoing health struggles, she remained optimistic, drawing inspiration from her battle for her album and concert tour, "The Living Room."
Legacy
Beverly McClellan passed away at the age of 49 on October 30, 2018, surrounded by loved ones and her wife, Monique. She will be remembered for her incredible voice, her fearless spirit, and her enduring love for music.
