Biography of Bharrat Jagdeo
Early Life and Political BeginningsBharrat Jagdeo was born on January 23, 1964, in Unity Village on the East Coast of Demerara. At the age of 13, he joined the Progressive Youth Organisation, a youth wing of the People's Progressive Party (PPP). He rose through the party's ranks, becoming a member of its Central Committee in 1993 and its Executive Committee later on.
Minister of Finance
After earning a Master's degree in Economics from the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow in 1990, Jagdeo returned to Guyana and began his career as an economist in the State Planning Secretariat. Following the PPP's election victory in October 1992, he became a Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance. In 1993, he was appointed Junior Minister of Finance, and in 1995, he became Senior Minister of Finance.
Presidency
On August 8, 1999, Janet Jagan, then President of Guyana, announced her resignation due to health reasons. She appointed Bharrat Jagdeo as her successor. Under the law, the Prime Minister assumes the presidency when the incumbent resigns. Thus, Jagdeo became Prime Minister on August 9 and President on August 11, 1999.
First Term (1999-2006)
Jagdeo won two consecutive five-year terms as President in 2001 and 2006. During his first term, he focused on economic development and improving the lives of ordinary Guyanese. He introduced several social programs, including free education and healthcare. Jagdeo also played a key role in the Caricom region, advocating for unity and cooperation among Caribbean nations.
Second Term (2006-2011)
In 2006, Jagdeo's PPP won a third term in office with 54.6% of the vote. His second term was marked by continued economic growth and progress in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Jagdeo also played a leading role in international climate change negotiations, advocating for urgent action to protect the planet.
Legacy
Bharrat Jagdeo left office in 2011 with a legacy of economic growth and social progress. He is widely recognized as a transformative leader who played a pivotal role in Guyana's development. Jagdeo remains active in public life, serving as an elder statesman and advocate for sustainable development.
