Early Life and Career
Luigi Bianco, known by his pseudonym Gambini, was an Italian-Brazilian footballer and coach born in São Paulo, Brazil. He started his professional career at the age of 12 with Tiradentes. At 19, Gambini left Brazil for Argentina, where he played for the second division club Estudiantiles Porteños.
Return to Brazil and Corinthians
In 1913, Gambini returned to Brazil and spent two seasons with Corinthians as a midfielder. He captained the team and led them to their first title, the Campeonato Paulista, in 1914.
Palmeiras and First Goal
In 1915, Gambini joined Palestra Italia, later renamed Palmeiras. On January 24, 1915, he scored the first goal in the club's history in their debut match against Savoy, a 2-0 victory. He captained the team throughout his 12-year stay and led them to three Campeonato Paulista titles.
International Career
Gambini made his Brazilian debut at the 1919 South American Championship in a 6-0 victory over Chile. He played a total of five matches in the tournament, including the final, where Brazil defeated Uruguay and won their first international trophy. His last international match was a 3-3 draw with Argentina on July 1, 1919.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Gambini remained with Palmeiras and served as their manager. He led the team to Campeonato Paulista victories in 1931 and 1944.
Legacy
Luigi Bianco, known as Gambini, is remembered as a pioneer of Brazilian football. As a defender, he won numerous championships with Corinthians and Palmeiras, including the first Campeonato Paulista win for "Verdão." His goal in the first match of Palestra Italia remains an iconic moment in the club's history.
