American Engineer and Inventor

Bill Booth is an American engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who is best known for his significant contributions to the field of modern parachuting. He is the founder of several companies involved in parachute manufacturing and has authored several revolutionary advancements in parachute technology, including the '3 Ring' system and the 'pilot chute' device known as the 'soft jellyfish'.

Early Career and Inventions

Bill Booth began his career in 1972 in Miami, where he opened his own company, 'Relative Workshop', in his garage. By the late 1970s, he had already introduced several significant and useful improvements to the sport of skydiving. In 1977, Booth patented the '3 Ring' system, a circular locking device consisting of three interconnected rings of different sizes. This system reduced mechanical effort by 200 times, greatly simplifying safety systems. Remarkably, Booth only charged one symbolic dollar for each parachute that utilized his invention. In 1983, he was awarded the prestigious 'Parachute Equipment Industry Association Achievement Award', and in 1984, he received the gold medal from the Federation Aeronautic International for his "outstanding achievements in parachute design", which is the highest honor in the field.

Other Inventions and Achievements

One of Booth's lesser-known inventions is the 'soft jellyfish' device, which allows modern parachutists to deploy their main parachute directly into the airflow by hand, significantly speeding up the packing process. This device marked Booth's first invention in the field of skydiving. Among his other inventions and innovations are the Skyhook RSL system introduced in 2003, the drogue release system for Sigma tandem systems, and the WonderHog backpack. More recently, Booth has developed magnetic valves and a reserve parachute ring with an elastic strap.

Recognition and Popularity

Bill Booth's efforts to enhance skydiving safety have earned him immense respect and gratitude from both experts and enthusiasts in the field. He has made cameo appearances in Hollywood movies such as 'The Firm' starring Tom Cruise and played the character of the bearded skydiver in the film 'Cutaway'. Booth's recognizable trademark is his ZZ Top-style beard.

Current Work and Personal Life

Today, Bill Booth continues his work at 'United Parachute Technologies'. In his personal life, it is known that he has two daughters.
