Early Life and Business SuccessWilliam Perry Clements Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas. He embarked on a successful career in the oil industry, founding SEDCO, a leading offshore drilling contractor, in 1947.
Political Career
Governor of Texas (1979–1983)In 1979, Clements became the first Republican governor of Texas since Reconstruction. He served two terms, from 1979 to 1983, and his tenure was the longest in state history until Rick Perry.
During his first term, Clements grappled with an oil spill involving SEDCO and presided over the first execution by lethal injection in the United States.
