Early Life and Education
José María Aznar was born on February 25, 1953, in Madrid, Spain. His father, Manuel Aznar López, was the director of the right-wing newspaper "El Sol." Aznar graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid with a degree in law.
Entry into Politics
Aznar's interest in politics began in the early 1970s. He joined the National Alliance, a conservative political party, in 1979. In 1984, he was elected to the Cortes, the Spanish Parliament, representing Ávila.
Rise to Power
In 1987, Aznar became the leader of the regional branch of the People's Alliance in Castile and León and was appointed president of the autonomous region's government. In 1989, he was elected Vice-President and, in 1990, President of the People's Party (PP), the successor to the National Alliance.
Prime Ministership
In 1996, the PP won the parliamentary elections, and Aznar became Prime Minister. During his tenure, he implemented policies known as "new conservatism," which included economic stability, modernization, tax reform, and a focus on combating corruption and Basque separatism.
Foreign Policy
Aznar's foreign policy was oriented towards the United States. He also focused on strengthening relations with Latin America, particularly in terms of economics and political transformation.
Controversies and Defeat
Aznar's tenure was marked by the terrorist attacks in Madrid on March 11, 2004. Initially blaming Basque separatists, his government's handling of the situation contributed to the PP's defeat in the 2004 elections. The party's unpopular support for the invasion of Iraq also played a role.
Post-Premiership
After leaving office, Aznar published a book titled "Letters to a Young Spaniard" in 2007. He also became a member of the European Council on Tolerance and Mutual Respect in 2008. In 2010, he led the international organization "Friends of Israel Initiative."
Personal Life
Aznar married Ana Botella in 1977, and they have three children. Botella served as Mayor of Madrid from 2011 to 2015.
