Early Life and Education

Born into a Lusatian Serb family, Handrij Zejler (1804-1872) was a prominent figure in the movement to preserve and promote the Lusatian Serb language and culture. Zejler received his higher education at the University of Leipzig, where he studied law.

Defender of Lusatian Serb Identity

Preserving Language and Traditions:Despite writing primarily in German, Zejler dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of the Lusatian Serbs. As a student in Leipzig, he revived the Lusatian Serb Preaching Society to promote the use of the language in religious services.

Educational Advancements:In 1833-1834, Zejler's advocacy successfully defended the use of Lusatian Serb in schools. Later, as an authorized representative of his community, he secured government permission to establish the Maćica Serbska, a literary society dedicated to preserving and promoting Lusatian Serb culture.

Political Influence

Supporter of the Monarchy:During the tumultuous revolutions of 1848-1849, Zejler's loyalty to the Prussian monarchy prevented the government from imposing restrictions on Lusatian Serb cultural development.

Contributions to Scholarship

Preface to the Literary Journal:Zejler wrote the preface to the Maćica Serbska's journal, "Časopis Maćicy Serbskeje." This preface articulated the goals and mission of the society and its importance in the preservation of Lusatian Serb culture.
