Blade: The Vampire Hunter
Early Life and OriginBlade, born Eric Brooks in London in 1929, emerged from a tragic birth. As his mother, a prostitute, succumbed to complications, an unknown predator attacked her. Little did they know, this predator was Deacon Frost, a vampire who unknowingly bestowed upon Eric supernatural abilities through his blood. Thanks to the intervention of prostitutes from his mother's brothel, Eric survived the encounter.
Growing up in the Soho district, Eric was taken under the wing of Jamal Afari, a jazz musician and seasoned vampire hunter, who taught him martial arts and weaponry. Armed with knives and daggers, Eric fought alongside Afari, honing his skills as a formidable adversary against the undead.
The Bloodshadows and a Tragic Loss
However, Eric's youthful hubris led him astray. He joined the Bloodshadows, a street gang led by the powerful vampire Lamia. While victorious against Lamia, his victory was marred by the death of his beloved, Glory. This tragedy awakened him to the true purpose of his life: eradicating vampires.
The Fight Against Dracula and Deacon Frost
When Afari fell victim to Dracula, Blade's path intersected with his greatest enemy. Pursuing Dracula relentlessly, Blade joined forces with Ogun Strong's vampire hunters in China. However, their mission ended in disaster, leaving only Blade and Musenda alive.
Blade's pursuit of his archnemesis took him to Europe, where he allied with Quincy Harker's vampire-hunting organization. This collaboration proved futile, leading to Blade's discovery of his immunity to vampire bites. Determined to avenge his mother's death, he confronted Deacon Frost in Boston.
Additional Allies and Arsenals
Over the course of his adventures, Blade has crossed paths with various allies, including Hannibal King, a vampire private investigator. Together, they vanquished Frost, although the latter's resurrection remained a persistent threat. Blade also allied with Spider-Man and joined the government-sanctioned superhero group Vanguard.
Throughout his comic book appearances, Blade's arsenal expanded beyond the simple wooden stakes and daggers of his early days. He incorporated Japanese katanas, firearms, flamethrowers, ultraviolet devices, and silver weapons into his relentless crusade against vampires.
Costume and Inspiration
According to artist Gene Colan, Blade's striking appearance was inspired by a combination of "dark-skinned actors," including NFL player Jim Brown. Colan envisioned him as a heroic figure, clad in a leather jacket and armed with an array of blades. The character's iconic blood patronage was conceived by writer Marv Wolfman, further establishing Blade as a formidable and stylish vampire hunter.
