Bob Avakian: Maoist Revolutionary and Leader of the RCP

Early Life and Activism

Robert Bruce Avakian was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Berkeley, California by Armenian-American parents. Inspired by the civil rights movement, his father became a lawyer and judge. As a student at Berkeley, Avakian joined the New Left organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Free Speech Movement, and the Black Panther Party. His writings in the Peace and Freedom Party and participation in the Black Panther conference in Oakland in 1969 marked his early involvement in radical politics.

Revolutionary Activism

After the dissolution of SDS, Avakian became a leading member of the Revolutionary Youth Movement II faction. Despite losing the election for national secretary, he was elected to the National Provisional Committee. He was also a prominent figure in the Bay Area Revolutionary Union. Avakian's activism led to his imprisonment for flag desecration during a protest. In 1979, he was accused of assaulting a police officer and fled to France after an arrest warrant was issued. His charges were later dropped.

Leadership of the RCP

Upon returning to the U.S. in 1980, Avakian became the Chairman of the Central Committee and national leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP). He developed the party's ideology, "the New Synthesis," based on Maoism. Avakian has toured the country and published several books, including his autobiography, "From Ike to Mao and Beyond."

Political Ideology

Avakian is known for his radical communist views. He believes that capitalism is an oppressive system that must be overthrown through revolution. His "New Synthesis" ideology combines Marxism-Leninism-Maoism with an analysis of imperialism, gender oppression, and other social issues.

Controversy and Criticism

Avakian is a controversial figure. Supporters praise him as a revolutionary leader and innovative communist theorist who offers a "path to human liberation." Critics accuse him of creating a cult of personality within the RCP. His philosophy has been criticized by The Boston Globe as "deeply flawed" and "unpersuasive." Despite the criticism, Avakian remains a prominent figure in the American radical left.
