Biography of Bob Backlund

Bob Backlund is an American professional wrestler and actor who has had a successful career spanning over thirty years. He has held the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) championship title twice.

Early Life and Career

Backlund began his wrestling career while attending the University of North Dakota in the late 1960s to early 1970s. After graduating with a degree in Physical Education, he pursued professional wrestling and was trained by the legendary wrestler Eddie Sharkey.

Professional Wrestling Career

Backlund made his professional wrestling debut in 1973 in the American Wrestling Association (AWA). His impressive physical appearance and fighting technique quickly earned him a reputation as a natural babyface, gaining a strong fan following. After a period in the AWA, he moved to the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and traveled to various territories.

Championship Success

In 1975, Backlund joined the Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) and, alongside Jerry Brisco, won the tag team championship title by defeating Toru Tanaka and Mr. Fuji. They held the title for two months before losing it to Les Thornton and Tony Charles. In 1976, Backlund moved to Florida and also competed in St. Louis.

In early 1977, Backlund joined the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), which later became the WWF. Within four months, he had a match against the then-champion, Billy Graham, although he lost, it marked the beginning of his career in the new federation. Throughout 1977, Backlund competed for the championship title and eventually emerged victorious. He also had a rare match against NWA heavyweight champion Harley Race, which ended in a draw after sixty intense minutes.

In August 1980, Backlund teamed up with Pedro Morales and won the WWF tag team championship. However, they had to relinquish the title due to the rules at the time that prohibited wrestlers from holding two championship titles simultaneously. Later that year, Backlund, partnered with Antonio Inoki, won the MSG Tag League tournament, defeating Hulk Hogan and Stan Hansen in the finals.

Decline and Return

As time passed, Backlund's popularity decreased. He faced competition from other wrestlers who were more successful than him, and the WWF management began promoting the charismatic and muscular Hulk Hogan. Vince McMahon personally spoke with Backlund, explaining that Hogan was the future of WWF. Initially, the plan was for Backlund to turn heel and eventually lose to Hogan in a fair match, but Backlund did not agree with this plan. As a result, a temporary champion, Iron Sheik, was used, and Backlund lost to him on December 26, 1983.

On August 4, 1984, Backlund defeated Salvatore Bellomo before leaving WWF. However, he could not stay away from wrestling for long. He made a comeback in 1992 and then again in 2000. Since 2007, Backlund has participated in matches for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNAW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). In 2000, he also attempted to run for the United States Congress as a Republican candidate in Connecticut, but was unsuccessful.
