Biography of Bob Younger

Robert Ewing 'Bob' Younger, an American criminal, was born on October 29, 1853, in Missouri. He was the 13th child out of 14 in the family of a prosperous farmer, Henry Washington Younger. During the American Civil War, his brothers Cole and Jim participated in raids under the command of William Clarke Quantrill. At the start of the war in 1861, Bob was only eight years old. He witnessed Union soldiers killing his father and watched as their home burned to the ground.

After the war, his brothers formed the infamous 'James-Younger Gang' with Frank and Jesse James. For ten years, the gang robbed banks, trains, and stagecoaches across Missouri, Kansas, and neighboring states. It is believed that Bob joined his brothers' gang in 1873. In September 1876, the outlaws attempted to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota. However, the brave townspeople decided to fight back, and during the shootout, Cole, Jim, and Bob were captured. Bob was initially severely wounded in the elbow joint and later received a bullet to the chest, resulting in the death of two civilians in Northfield.

Bob, like his brothers, confessed to all their crimes to avoid being hanged. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment at Stillwater Prison. At the time, Bob was 36 years old. He died from tuberculosis on September 16, 1889. His body was laid to rest at the Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery.
