Early Career and Toulouse

Moussa Balde, a French-Guinean professional footballer, began his career at Olympique Marseille in 1995. He was loaned out to Mulhouse in 1997-98 before joining Cannes on loan after Mulhouse's relegation to Ligue 3. After leaving Marseille, Balde moved to Toulouse, helping them achieve promotion to Ligue 1 in 1999-00.

Celtic Signing and Impact

Balde's impressive performances earned him a move to Celtic on July 21, 2001. He quickly became a regular, making 232 appearances and scoring 16 goals for the club.

Balde made his debut on September 8 in a 3-1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic. He scored his first goal on October 20 against Dundee United. In his debut season, he scored six goals, including one in the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers.

Success and Recognition

The following season, Balde scored his first goal on September 1 against Livingston. He played a key role in Celtic's 3-3 draw against Rangers in their first Old Firm derby of the season. At the end of the campaign, he was voted Celtic's Player of the Year by 40,000 supporters. He also won Player of the Month for April.

Balde featured in 12 of Celtic's 13 UEFA Cup matches that season, helping them reach the final against Porto at the Olympic Stadium in Seville. He received a red card in the 95th minute of the final, which Celtic lost 2-3 despite two goals from Henrik Larsson.

Balde continued to perform well in 2003-04, scoring his first goal against Dundee in the fifth round of the SPL. He was issued a red card in the following game and received a total of seven yellows and one red card during the season. Despite this, he helped Celtic win the SPL Championship and Scottish Cup again.

Racial Abuse and Controversies

Balde faced racial abuse from some Rangers fans during Old Firm derbies in December 2002, March 2003, and May 2004. A Dundee fan was convicted of racism after a game at Dens Park in March 2004, while a businessman was banned from attending Kilmarnock home matches following racist remarks towards Balde in October 2004. He had also received abuse from Motherwell fans in October 2001.

Later Career

Balde began the 2004-05 season with one yellow card in his first six games and scored in Celtic's 8-1 League Cup victory over Falkirk. He received a red card in a pre-season friendly against Leicester City under new manager Gordon Strachan for a challenge on 17-year-old James Wesolowski.

Celtic faced Slovak side Petrzalka in the second qualifying round of the 2005-06 Champions League, losing 0-5 at home before winning 4-0 away but failing to progress. Balde played in both matches. He finished the season with seven yellow cards and one goal, winning the League Cup and SPL Championship. He later sustained an abdominal injury.
