A Veteran's Perspective on Final Four PsychologyBožidar Maljković, the head coach of Spanish club Taugrés, shared his insights on the psychological aspects of the upcoming EuroLeague Final Four in Athens.
Four-Time Champion and Title Contender
Maljković, 55, is a seasoned coach with eight Final Four appearances and four championship titles. His winning ways include victories with Jugoplastika(1989 and 1990), Limoges CSP(1993), and Panathinaikos(1996), whom Taugrés will face in the semifinals.
The Importance of Mental Fortitude
"Before every Final Four, I emphasize two things," Maljković said. "First, each team has a 25% chance of winning the title. Second, I go to the tournament to give my players an open practice in front of 20,000 fans. Nothing more. Yet, experience has taught me that the team that can force its opponent to play to its advantage in both games will come closest to the title."
Underdogs with Potential
Despite predictions that Taugrés and Unicaja might play second fiddle, Maljković remains confident. "Panathinaikos and CSKA are the main contenders in terms of budget, roster quality (which doesn't mean we're behind them in this), and club organization... But I believe in my guys. We have the qualities to compete with any team on an equal footing. However, it would be premature to make any bold predictions."
The Changing Face of Panathinaikos
Reflecting on his past as coach of Panathinaikos, Maljković noted the team's shift in strategy. "When I was at the club, the policy was to sign top-class stars like Dominique Wilkins, Dejan Bodiroga, Žarko Paspalj, Dino Rađa, and Stojan Vranković... Now, the situation has changed significantly. The emphasis is on creating a collective game, and acquisitions have been made accordingly, starting with Ramūnas Šiškauskas, continuing with Miloš Vujović, Dejan Tomašević, the Athenians' best player Dimitris Diamantidis, then Mike Batiste, who half of Europe is after, and finally Sani Bečirović, once the greatest talent in European basketball."
The Role of Pressure
Maljković expressed doubts about the likelihood of seeing spectacular basketball in Athens. "There have been many ups and downs in the game in recent years. Remember the collapse of Fortitudo Bologna, which was blown away by Maccabi in 2004 with a difference of over 40 points, or the performance of my current club last year, when Tau was easily defeated by the same Maccabi. Therefore, psychological preparation plays a crucial role, and the advantage will be with the team that plays the most consistently. I've been to seven Final Fours, and each time I've demanded one thing from my team — not to surpass themselves, but to play as they objectively can. There will be no brilliant games in Athens. Too much is at stake, and the pressure on referees, players, and coaches is enormous."
