Early Life and Education
Bohumil Kubišta was born in Vlčkovice, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) on September 21, 1884. As a young man, he studied at a technical college from 1896 to 1903 and then at the School of Applied Arts in Prague from 1903 to 1905.
Artistic Journey
Florence and "Osma"In 1906, Kubišta traveled to Florence to study painting. Upon his return to Prague in 1907, he participated in his first art exhibition and joined the artists' group "Osma" ("Eight").
Paris and the "Most" Group
In 1910, Kubišta visited Paris, which had a significant impact on his artistic style. After returning to Prague, he helped organize an exhibition of "independents."
The "Most" Group
In 1911, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Müller of the German expressionist group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge) visited Kubišta in Prague. Inspired by their work, Kubišta joined the "Most" group and exhibited with them at the Sonderbund exhibitions in Cologne and Berlin in 1912.
War and Military Service
During World War I, Kubišta was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army and served on various fronts. He earned the Order of Leopold for his military service.
Artistic Legacy
Kubišta's artistic output was marked by a blend of Cubism, Expressionism, and Symbolism. Notable works include "Hypnotist," "The Double," and "Promenade in the Riga Garden."
Later Life and Death
After the war, Kubišta continued to paint and exhibit his work. He died tragically from the Spanish flu in Prague on November 27, 1918, at the age of 34.
