Early Life and Reign
Bolesław III the Red, born into the Přemyslid dynasty, was the son of Bolesław II the Pious and Adélaïde of England. He ascended to the throne of Bohemia in 999 and quickly established a reign marked by brutality towards his brothers, Jaromír and Oldřich, as well as his subjects.
Exile and Return
In 1002, Bolesław was deposed by the Bohemians, who invited the Polish Duke Vladivoj to replace him. However, Vladivoj's reign was short-lived, as he died within a year. The Czechs then recalled Bolesław's exiled brothers, Jaromír and Oldřich.
Bolesław sought alliances with Henry, Margrave of Austria, and Bolesław I the Brave of Poland. With Polish assistance, he was reinstated on the Bohemian throne in 1003.
Reprisals and Downfall
Upon his return, Bolesław exacted brutal revenge on the Vršovci clan, who had played a role in his downfall. On February 10, 1003, he lured the Vršovci nobles into a house and orchestrated a massacre.
His actions provoked the wrath of the remaining Bohemian nobles, who appealed to Bolesław I the Brave for intervention. The Polish duke captured Bolesław in 1003 and blinded him, forcing him into exile.
Later Life and Legacy
Bolesław III the Red died in Poland in 1037. The details of his life after his blinding remain unknown. He is remembered as a ruthless and short-lived ruler whose reign was a period of turmoil and conflict.
