Biography of Bonaldo Giaiotti

Bonaldo Giaiotti was an Italian opera singer, known for his deep bass voice that was particularly associated with the Italian operatic repertoire. He was born on December 25, 1932, in Udine, Italy. Giaiotti studied music in his hometown and later in Milan under the tutelage of Alfredo Starno.

Career

In 1957, Giaiotti made his operatic debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan. After a series of successful performances in regional opera houses in Italy, he made his American debut in 1959 at the Cincinnati Opera, singing the role of Basilio in "Il barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville).

The following year, on October 24, 1960, Giaiotti made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, marking the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration. He remained with the Met for 25 seasons and performed in over 300 productions, portraying around 30 different roles. Some of his most popular performances included Raymond Bidebend in "Lucia di Lammermoor," Ramfis in "Aida," and Timur in "Turandot."

Giaiotti also appeared in major opera houses around the world, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opéra Garnier in Paris, Vienna State Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Zurich Opera, Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

In addition to Italian operas, Giaiotti also performed roles in non-Italian operas. He sang the role of the High Priest in Karl Goldmark's "Die Königin von Saba" at the Teatro Regio in 1991 and portrayed Cleomède in Jules Massenet's "Esclarmonde" at the Teatro Massimo in January 1993. He also took on challenging roles such as Cardinal de Brogni in Fromental Halévy's "La Juive" and one of the Anabaptists in Meyerbeer's "Le Prophète."

Giaiotti's beautiful and resonant voice, combined with his impeccable technique, established him as one of the leading basses of his generation. He recorded numerous albums and collaborated with renowned opera stars such as Birgit Nilsson, Renata Scotto, Leontyne Price, Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, and others.
