Early Life and Education

Born in Santa Monica, California, Bonnie Franklin moved to Beverly Hills at age 13. She attended high school there, graduating in 1961. Franklin then pursued her education at Smith College, participating in theater productions with Amherst College, notably the musical "Good News." Returning to California, she attended UCLA.

Stage and Broadway Debut

Franklin's first television appearance came at age 9 on "The Colgate Comedy Hour." Her Broadway debut followed in 1970 in the Tony-nominated musical "Applause." However, it was her iconic role as divorced mother Ann Romano in the sitcom "One Day at a Time" (1975-1984) that brought her widespread fame.

Career Highlights

In addition to "One Day at a Time," Franklin also appeared in "Gidget" and directed episodes of the 1980s sitcom "Charles in Charge." Her later stage credits include "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1999) and "Grace and Glorie" (1998). She also performed as Grim Reaper in "For the Price of a Cup of Coffee."
