Biography of Bonnie Hammer
Bonnie Hammer is an American producer and the chairman of several television networks. She currently serves as the chairman of NBCU Cable Entertainment & Cable Studios. In January 2011, Hammer took on additional responsibilities, overseeing the operations of the satellite television network E! Entertainment, E! Studios, and G4. She continued to oversee the activities of the USA Network, as well as cable channels Syfy, Chiller, Cloo, Universal HD, and the production company Universal Cable Productions.
Early Life and Education
Bonnie Hammer graduated from the Boston University College of Communication in 1971. She also received a master's degree in media technology from the same university in 1975.
Television Career
Hammer's television career began at the public television station WGBH in Boston, where she produced the series "This Old House" and "ZOOM," both of which received critical acclaim. She later became the executive producer of the program "Good Day!" at WCVB, the Boston affiliate of the ABC network.
Hammer continued to climb the career ladder, gaining recognition in professional circles in New York as the programming executive at cable channel Lifetime Television. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing the production of documentary series, some of which received awards. Hammer also gained notoriety for canceling the series "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in 1999 and "Farscape" in 2002.
Leadership Positions
As a leader in network planning and branding, Hammer previously served as the president of NBCU Cable Entertainment & Cable Studios. In May 2004, she took on the responsibility of overseeing the USA Network while continuing to lead the Syfy channel. In March 2008, Hammer assumed the helm of the newly formed production company Universal Cable Productions. Around the same time, she also became the head of the channels Sleuth (now Cloo), Chiller, and Universal HD, which are among the most successful digital cable networks.
Personal Life and Achievements
Bonnie Hammer, 63, is married and has two children. She resides in Westport, Connecticut. In addition to her main profession, Hammer has a passion for photography. Some of her photographs have been published in books and newspapers and exhibited in various galleries. She is ranked 73rd on Forbes magazine's list of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women."
