Biography of Boris Akimov

Boris Akimov is a ballet artist, ballet master, People's Artist of the USSR (1989), laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, and professor. He was born on June 25, 1946, in Vienna, Austria. In 1965, he graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School. From 1965 to 1989, he worked at the Bolshoi Theatre. In 1979, he completed the pedagogical department of the A.V. Lunacharsky State Institute of Theatrical Art. From 1980 to 1988, he taught at the choreography department of GITIS. Since 1989, he has been a pedagogue-ballet master at the Bolshoi Theatre. He has worked as a pedagogue-ballet master at the Royal Opera House in London, La Scala in Milan, Asami Maki Ballet in Tokyo, Vienna State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, Paris National Opera, Mariinsky Theatre, Basel Ballet in Switzerland, Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam, and the Royal Ballet School in London. From 2000 to 2003, Boris Akimov was the artistic director of the ballet troupe at the Bolshoi Theatre. From 2001 to 2005, he was a professor at the department of male classical and duet-classical dance at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography. In 2001 and 2002, he served as the acting rector of the academy, and from 2002 to 2005, he was the artistic director of the academy.
