Boris Leonidovich Bogorodsky

Early Life and Education

Boris Bogorodsky was born on July 23 (August 5), 1896, in the town of Norsky Posad, Yaroslavl Governorate. His father was a priest at the local Assumption Cathedral. Bogorodsky completed his primary education at the local Zemstvo School, where he later taught Russian language and literature and served as the director. He went on to graduate from the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute in 1929.

Academic Career

In 1940, Bogorodsky defended his candidate's dissertation, titled "Maritime Terminology in the Era of Peter I." Between 1940 and 1947, he worked at the Institute of Russian Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1945 onwards, he taught at the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute, becoming a professor in 1965. He received the Doctor of Philological Sciences degree in 1965.

Scientific Contributions

Bogorodsky's research focused primarily on Russian historical lexicology, particularly the terminology and phraseology of sailors and riverboat workers. He also studied the history of Russian literary language and Russian dialectology.

Bogorodsky was involved in compiling the Dictionary of Old Russian Language and developing the prospectus for the "Reference Dictionary of 'The Tale of Igor's Campaign.'" He passed away on January 10, 1985.
