Boris Fyodorovich Derevyanko
Early Life and CareerBoris Fyodorovich Derevyanko was a prominent Soviet and Ukrainian journalist. He was born in Russia in 1929 and began his career as a journalist in Odessa, Ukraine.
Founding of "Evening Odessa"
In 1960, Derevyanko founded the newspaper "Evening Odessa" and served as its first and only chief editor until his death. The newspaper became one of the most influential publications in Ukraine.
Achievements and Recognition
Derevyanko was awarded the title of Honored Journalist of the Ukrainian SSR. He also authored several books and television film scripts. Additionally, he served as a People's Deputy of the USSR and as a deputy in the Odessa City Council.
Refusal to Work in Central Media
Despite invitations to work in central media organizations in Ukraine and the USSR, Derevyanko consistently declined, choosing to remain in Odessa.
Criticism of Odessa's Mayor
Derevyanko was known for his harsh criticism of Odessa's mayor, Eduard Gurvitz. His criticisms often centered on the mayor's alleged corruption and mismanagement.
Assassination
On August 11, 1997, Derevyanko was assassinated as he was walking to work in Odessa. The killing was believed to have been a contract hit, but the perpetrators have never been identified.
Trial and Sentencing
Alexander Glek was convicted of the murder in 1999 and sentenced to death. However, the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Despite the conviction, doubts about Glek's involvement in the crime remain.
Legacy
Boris Fyodorovich Derevyanko's legacy lives on in Odessa. A square in the city was named after him, and a memorial plaque marks the site of his assassination. His work as a courageous and independent journalist continues to inspire and inform Ukrainian society.
